Step 1
Heat water, salt, sugar, and butter in a saucepan over medium heat until the mixture begins to simmer.
Step 2
Add the flour and stir vigorously until a thick dough forms. Continue mixing until the dough pulls away from the sides of the pan and becomes smooth.
Step 3
Allow the dough to cool slightly. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract if using for extra richness and flavor.
Step 4
Transfer the dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star-shaped nozzle. This creates the classic ridged churro texture.
Step 5
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully pipe strips of dough directly into the hot oil.
Step 6
Fry the churros for 2–4 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels.
Step 7
While still warm, roll the churros in cinnamon sugar until fully coated.
Step 8
Serve immediately with warm chocolate sauce, caramel, dulce de leche, or your favorite dipping sauce.
The star-shaped piping tip helps churros cook evenly and become extra crispy.
For best results, fry churros in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
Churros taste best when served fresh and warm.
Avoid microwaving leftovers because it softens the crispy texture.
Reheat in the oven or air fryer at 350°F for several minutes to restore crispiness.
