Learn how to make irresistibly juicy South Carolina Bird Dog Sandwiches at home with tender chicken, honey mustard sauce, and tangy BBQ flavors. Perfect for quick lunches or game day treats.
1 pound chicken tenders (grilled, fried, baked, or rotisserie/frozen)
1/2 cup South Carolina mustard BBQ sauce
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon honey
Salt and pepper, to taste
4 hoagie rolls (soft, pillowy; sandwich buns are an alternative)
1/4 cup pickles, chopped (bread and butter or dill)
1 small red onion, thinly sliced
1/2 cup shredded lettuce or coleslaw
Hot sauce (optional for added heat)
Prepare the chicken: Season raw chicken tenders generously with salt and pepper. Cook by grilling, baking, or frying for 5–7 minutes per side until golden brown and fully cooked.
Make the honey mustard sauce: In a medium bowl, blend mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, honey, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.
Toast the rolls: Lightly toast hoagie rolls in an oven or skillet for 2–3 minutes until edges are crispy and golden.
Assemble the sandwiches: Spread a generous layer of honey mustard sauce on the bottom of each roll. Place a cooked chicken tender on top, then drizzle with mustard BBQ sauce.
Layer shredded lettuce or coleslaw, red onion slices, and chopped pickles. Add hot sauce if desired.
Cap with the top half of the roll and serve immediately while warm.
For a faster option, use rotisserie or frozen chicken tenders.
Bread and butter pickles add a touch of sweetness, while dill pickles provide a classic tang.
Serve with fries or chips for a complete meal.
Adjust BBQ sauce and hot sauce for desired flavor intensity.
