Ingredients

For the Arepa Dough:

2 cups pre-cooked white cornmeal (Harina PAN)

2 ½ cups warm water

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)

Optional Add-Ins:

½ cup shredded cheese (for cheesy arepas)

1 tablespoon chia or flaxseed (for added fiber)

Popular Fillings (Choose Your Favorite):

Reina Pepiada: Shredded chicken, mashed avocado, mayo, lime juice, cilantro

Perico: Scrambled eggs with onion, tomato, and bell pepper

Domino: Black beans and crumbled white cheese

Pelúa: Shredded beef with yellow cheese

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, mix warm water and salt.
Slowly add the Harina PAN while stirring to prevent lumps.
Knead gently for 2–3 minutes until smooth.

Let the dough rest for 5–10 minutes to fully hydrate.

2. Shape the Arepas

Divide dough into 6–8 equal portions.
Roll into balls and flatten into discs about ½ inch thick.

3. Cook the Arepas

Heat oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
Cook arepas for 5–6 minutes per side until golden brown and crisp.

4. Optional Oven Finish (Recommended)

Transfer to a 350°F (175°C) oven for 10 minutes to ensure a soft, fluffy center.

5. Slice & Fill

Once slightly cooled, slice halfway open and stuff with your favorite filling.

Notes

If the dough cracks when shaping, add 1 tablespoon of warm water at a time.

Tap the arepa—if it sounds hollow, it’s done.

Bake instead of pan-fry for a lighter version.

Arepas can be frozen after cooking and reheated in the oven or air fryer.

For authentic texture, always use pre-cooked corn flour, not regular cornmeal.
