This classic Amish hamburger steak bake is rich, hearty, and smothered in creamy onion gravy—comfort food at its finest, perfect with mashed potatoes.
For the Hamburger Steaks:
2 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
½ cup plain or seasoned breadcrumbs
1 egg, beaten
1 onion, finely diced
2 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
For the Creamy Gravy:
3 tbsp butter (salted or unsalted)
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups low-sodium beef broth
1 cup heavy cream
1 onion, thinly sliced
1 tsp garlic powder
Mix Hamburger Steaks:
In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper until just combined. Do not overwork.
Shape & Brown Patties:
Form into 6–8 oval-shaped patties. Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side until golden, then set aside.
Prepare Gravy:
In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until softened. Add flour and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Gradually whisk in beef broth and heavy cream. Stir in garlic powder and bring to a simmer.
Bake:
Nestle browned patties into the gravy. Cover skillet (or transfer to a 9×13 baking dish and cover tightly with foil). Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes until thickened and bubbly.
Serve:
Remove from oven and let rest 10 minutes. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, noodles, or biscuits.
✔️ Use a meat thermometer to ensure patties reach at least 160°F internally.
✔️ This dish reheats beautifully and is freezer-friendly after baking.
✔️ For a flavor boost, stir in a splash of Worcestershire sauce or Dijon mustard to the gravy.
